Harry Potter with Wizards from 2020 and not the Dark Ages

With millions of others I am reading the final Harry Potter book. In this series the wizards are locked into the stereotype of what they were in the dark ages. So it seems an odd mix to have regular muggles/people of today mixed with an older idea of wizards. The wizards in the Harry Potter world are a bit clumsy, out-dated, maybe even too scientific. They require a wand, a broomstick, and weird ingredients to do anything. Might as well give them remote controls, jet packs, and vcr instruction manuals. It would be better if the books could step beyond the regular wizard myths we grew up with and go to the next level. Update the wizard genre to kick butt over today’s science and technology.

A New Wizard World

With today’s level of understanding the wizard world would be the same as our world, but it would be operating at a slightly higher frequency or energy pattern level. Humans are born tuned into this human frequency of reality, while a wizard is born tuned into their wizard frequency of reality.  Same world different frequencies together.

This allows for huge magnificent wizard cities right on top of our huge cities. Every human home is also likely a wizard home. Two separate families that don’t know, don’t care to know, and probably both don’t believe that the other exists. In both worlds it is a myth that the other exists.

So only the occasional person who is able to shift frequencies to choose which world to be in would directly know that both did exist. (The movie/book would probably start with the main character accidentally seeing someone do this frequency shift or do so themselves.)

A New Wizard

Secondly I find the wizards a bit like homeless people. You are forced to push a shopping cart around with all the stuff you might need; books, ingredients, potions, wands, brooms, cloaks, maps, phoenix feathers… The most powerful wizard drives a camper trailer filled with miscellaneous goofy items. For me the coolness factor is zero.

The only advanced/cool power today that can stay considered advanced/cool for the next 100 years is automatic reality shaping.Without any gadgets or silly phrases or smelly ingredients the world would change for wizards. Automatically. They could use direct will to change the universe around them, but it happens without the focus of direct will anyways. The total power of the wizard determines the amount of reality shaping and duration of the changes.

A weak wizard would have a cup of coffee appear on nearby ledges when needed. It could be old coffee and someone might ask why that wizard is drinking their coffee, but the wizard’s power does work.

A powerful wizard walking through a desert would have a Starbucks appear, with staff, other customers, no line up, fresh coffee, everything. After the wizard finished and continued on her journey the store would still exist. Eventually the store would go bankrupt, staff would be fired, and head office would search for a paper trail to explain why they built a store in the desert. No gadgets or ingredients required to create the store. Really the wizard could be absent mindedly walking, no idea or care about the desert, no plans for a coffee, stuff happens in the background all around her continuously her whole life. She is leaving a messy trail of Starbuck stores in weird locations without expending any effort or the slightest concern.

This would be impressive. Just as wizards and their world should be.  Usually they would have little interest to come down to our frequency level. Wizards would have a similar population size and structures as us. Only taken to the over the top impressive level. And reality would alter itself to accommodate their every individual whim. For myself that is a lot better than a wand, a broomstick, and smelly ingredients.
