Greatness and Limitations of Freud’s Thought

Author: Erich Fromm

Rating: 4/5

Jacket Cover Snippet:’…this book is rather a development of Freud’s thought through a critical interpretation of its philosophical basis.’

Comments:

Getting through the book is a bit of grind, so I might score it 3/5, but there are some really good ideas inside for a 5/5.  If you put in the effort it is recommended for some brain chin-ups.  It would be great to time-shift Freud here, let him study Wikipedia for a few months, and then see what he comes up with. A side association is that Freud always sends me to learn more about Georg Groddeck  and find his ‘The book of the it‘.

Generally I have avoided Freud since his followers tend to be fanatics for or against him…Freud’s group narcissism? One reason I gave this book a try was that the author’s last name Fromm is similar to my own last name From. (Doesn’t take much to convince a book addict to read another book…) I’m glad I did and I will search out a few more works by Erich from like ‘On Being Human’, ‘The Art of Listening’, ‘The Art of Being’, etc…
