Good Calories, Bad Calories
Author: Gary Taubes
Challenging the Conventional Wisdom on Diet, Weight Control, and Disease
Rating: 5/5
Inside Jacket Snippet: ‘… Based on the evidence that does exist, he leads us to conclude that the only healthy way to lose weight and remain leans is to eat fewer carbohydrates…’
Comments: The book is technical, detailed, huge, and covers a tonne of medical nutritional history. If you can make it through, the book is definitely worth the effort. Personally I’m not trying to lose weight, but I am interested in whether or not the Atkins diet is a healthier way to eat. Plus my father in-law is type 2 diabetic so I felt the book was good enough to encourage him to read it. He’s always unsure of what he is allowed or supposed to eat by the changing doctors recommendations.
On a different note this book can be used as a great example showing the dubious political nature of real life science. The pure science ideal is great, but in real life it does get beaten down. Just like most things.
