Galactrix Review

Company: Aspyr Media

Rating: 3/5

Overview Snippet: “… Collect a fleet of customizable spaceships, which endow your player with new skills and abilities, and fight in over 150 battles…’

Comments: I was an original Puzzle Quest addict enough to beat the game a few times and keep on playing until there was nothing left… sigh. But with Galactrix I have barely leveled the one type of player character to 30 (different pictures for each character but all of them play the same) and beat the final dude. I’m guessing my puzzle quest skills carried over a bit, but I think the game is just easy. Too many puzzle board options for the A.I. to have a strategy. Plus you get used to the random Super-Nova blast defeats/victories as part of the game.

It would have been better if each Hero option was from one of the different factions in the game… each faction would allow a few bonus ships no-one else could buy with unique weapons…. create a little replay value for the game.

The hack gates are mostly a chore and you will be sad when a few of the difficult class ones randomly close. Another improvement would be to have a few shop items specifically for the gate hacks, crafting levels, or mining puzzle levels.  Maybe even include some world map level items to permanently keep gates fixed or reveal cloaked space paths.

Overall the game is playable and acceptable, but it could easily have been much better. Hopefully the upcoming Puzzle Kingdoms is the true follow up to Puzzle Quest and not this Galactrix mini-game.
